Derby will be swinging along to the In The Mood show with Five Star Swing on Sunday, June 5.
Following their recent national tour, the show will be returning to the Guildhall Theatre with Shirley Bassey’s trombonist Michael Innes, who was also the musical director for Song for Europe.
Former Ivy Benson musician Simone Smith and her husband, Chris (from the band of Glenn Miller’s brother, Herb) feature in the show, which boasts a host of classic big band/swing songs from artists such as Frank Sinatra and Glenn Miller, through to Jools Holland-style jazz.
Chris Smith explained: “My father (Chris Smith Snr) played trombone for Frank Sinatra on his European tours and it’s great that there’s a strong resurgence in jazz and swing music enjoyed by all generations now. We’re looking forward to bringing the show back to town.”
Simone Smith, who sings and plays lead alto saxophone in the band, has also played with prestigious artists such as Paul Weller and John Williams. Bandleader Chris, who also sings, plays trumpet & Piano is well known in the jazz world for his arrangements and compositions frequently played on Jazz FM and BBC Radio 2.
