Come along to Derby’s one year to go celebration for the London 2012 Olympics.
Wednesday, July 27 marks exactly one year to the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in London and a celebration of the hosting of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be taking place in the city.
The Market Place will be transformed into a vibrant space with sports demonstrations, dance and music performances.
A tempting selection of things to do in Derby will be on offer. You can try out a new activity in the run up to the Olympics and take your pick from lots of activities including athletics, gymnastics, workouts (Shakespearean style), drumming, bunting making, rowing and even making up your own Olympic sport.
Derby’s International Cultural Festival banners, a Lottery-funded partnership project between School Sports Partnerships and Leisure and Cultural Services, will be on display for the first time, showing how 17 secondary schools in the city have been working with artists from different countries. A film of young people’s sports and arts work will be screened for the first time on the Big Screen alongside ‘magic moments‘from London celebrating this special day.
Mayor of Derby, Cllr Les Allen, said: “Derby’s ‘One Year to Go Celebrations’ will be an excellent introduction to the Olympic and Paralympic Games. It is a great opportunity to come down to the Market Place and try out some new activities. It will be a family friendly day when families can get active together. Even the armchair sportsmen and women will find something of interest with the carnival atmosphere, music, art, and dance as well as traditional sports. Some of the city’s young people from our secondary schools will also be showing their results of working with international artists. It will be a great day and there will be something for everyone to enjoy. I hope to see you there.”
Suzanne Meehan, chairman of Derbyshire Schools’ Sports Association, said: “The Olympic and Paralympic Games are the most exciting and inspirational sporting events in the world. As chair of the Derbyshire Schools’ Sports Association, I believe that we must use the magic of the games to inspire young people in Derby and Derbyshire to begin a life-long involvement in sport and physical activity. The One Year to Go Event will enable people to see and try some of the amazing opportunities that we have to enjoy sport and culture in our wonderful county. With one year to go until the games start, we are looking forward to an incredible year, which On Your Marks forms the start of.”
The event will start at 10am and is expected to finish at 7pm.
