Vets warn of kennel cough

Ilkeston's Priory Vets fear a summer of misery for pet pooches.
Over the past few weeks, the practice on Nottingham Road, has had an influx of pets with kennel cough, which makes dogs develop a harsh, dry hacking cough which can last several weeks. It can also make them run a
temperature, and go off their food.
Dogs which are sociable on walks or go to training or obedience classes are also at risk as it is easily passed from dog to dog. All dogs in boarding kennels are at particular risk.
Clinical director Ceri Andrews said: "We have seen more cases of kennel cough already this month than we expect to see all summer."
But kennel cough, infectious bronchitis, can be prevented with a vaccine any time up to three days before kennelling, though most practices and kennels prefer a one to two week interval. I
t is given as a few drops dribbled down the nostrils, and lasts for 12 months.
Priory Vets offer the vaccine at a reduced cost with a dog's health exam and booster - but until the end of July, a reduced cost will be available to all dog owners to help prevent the spread of kennel cough.
