Play traces roots of Christian movement

A play which sheds light on the life of the founder of the YMCA organisation will be staged in Derbyshire.

The Soul in the Machine tells the tale of country boy George Williams who visits London in 1844 to find gutters running with blood and effluent and skies choked with the smoke of factories and foundries. Appalled by the spirit-crushing rhythms of the worker’s life he fights to spread the light of God.

Saltmine Theatre Comppany stage The Soul in the Machine at Derby Cathedral, on May 20, at 7.30pm. Tickets £10 or £8 (concessions). Call 01332 579 550 or visit www. www.ticketsource.co.uk/derbycathdral
