Looking back at the hisotry of Ilkeston’s lace trade

AN EREWASH Museum exhibition about the town’s lace trade inspired a reader to send in this image.

John Morley worked at Tathams Lace in the early 60s.

This image shows Jack Holliday operating a raschel machine.

The factory produced two types of lace, raschel and Leavers lace.

Mr Morley said: “Back then the town was full of lace manufacturers, I worked in a few of them. It was easy to get work because there were so many businesses.

“It’s sad that there’s only the one place left doing it now because at one time Ilkeston was at the heart of it all.

“Everyone worked in the lace industry and if they didn’t they knew someone who did.

“I know there’s a few people who I worked with still about but it would be nice to speak to some others.”
