The A50 eastbound between Junctions 1 and 2 is set to remain closed into the evening following a multi-vehicle collision at around lunchtime.

It is understood the incident involved a car and two vans, and five people have been taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham as a result.

Fire crews from Long Eaton, Donington and Leicester have been at the scene along with Derbyshire Police and the East Midlands Ambulance Service.

A spokeswoman for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called at 12.58pm. One person was medically trapped [trapped by injuries] and was extricated by the fire service.”

An investigation into the cause of the crash will be carried out while the road is free from traffic.

The A6 between A6/B5010/Shardlow Road and A50 Junction 2 has been reportedly been closed to prevent traffic travelling south to the A50.

A diversion was put in place and drivers were advised to leave the A50 at junction 2 and join the A6 Alvaston bypass northbound towards Derby.

At Derby they should then continue on to the A5111 Raynesway northbound and remain on this road until the junction with the A52. They can then follow the M1 to reconnect with their original route.
