An angry resident has expressed his frustration that a council bus service into Ilkeston will be terminated.

Tony Hatfield of 2, Coach Way in Mapperley Village called the ‘Tiser last week, once he had discovered that the number 13 Notts and Derby bus service between Mapperley Village and Ilkeston was going to be stopped.

“I was talking to the bus driver who told me that he hadn’t been given any further shifts next month,” said Tony, a retired college workshop supervisor.

“I was straight on the phone to the council.”

A spokeswoman for the Derbyshire county council told the ‘Tiser that the bus service had been heavily under-used with average daily users totalling two.

She sai An alternative bus route was provided by Yourbus running from Mapperley crossroads, half a mile away from the number 13 bus stop.

“While we understand mobility may be an issue for some residents we would urge them to contact the council for community transport options.”

Reacting to the council’s response Tony said that he was angry that the council had not considered elderly residents.

He now plans to mount a protest in Ilkeston’s town centre with neighbours on March 29 with a horse ride from The Old Black Horse pub, Main Street in Mapperley Village into Ilkeston’s town square.

“We want the council to realise we will have to resort to old fashioned measures if this much needed bus route stops.”

The 13 bus service has run since 1999 and costs passengers £2.40 for a return journey.

A spokesman for the Notts and Derby service said he knew that the service has been put out to tender and they had been unsuccesful in their bid.

An alternative 59 Yourbus service runs from Mapperly Cross Roads to Ilkeston and costs £3.90 return.
