A rugby match will be held in Ilkeston on Saturday to raise money in memory of a former player who died four years ago.

The Gareth Lewis Memorial Match will be held for the third time at Ilkeston Rugby Club at 2pm.

Gareth died suddenly in 2010, at the age of 20. He had played for the under 19s team at the club from the age of six.

At last year’s match £2,000 was raised for the RFU Injured Players Foundation, a charity chosen by his parents following his untimely death.

Lee Jones, director of rugby at the club, told the ‘Tiser: “Gareth was a great lad who came up the ranks of the club. He was a good player and had just broke into the first team. He was well liked and respected.

“His parents want something positive to come from the day, so to honour their wishes we hold a charity auction with all proceeds going to the RFU Injured Players Foundation.

“There are usually a couple of hundred people watching. Some of the lads on the team don’t even play anymore but come back for the game.”

The match will see Gareth’s old team mates from his colts days take on the Elks select XV.

The game will be followed by a charity auction and barbecue.
