An empty shop on Ilkeston’s main shopping street is set to be transformed into a ‘pop-up’ artists’ gallery and studio.
Culture and Arts Forum Erewash (CAFE) has secured a temporary lease on the former Burton Menswear shop in the Albion Centre, which shut in 2010.
Over the next few weeks the store will become an open studio where shoppers can pop in to see works of art in production, meet the artists and take part in workshops.
The shop is expected to be open by the middle of next week, following a clean-up by offenders on a community payback team.
The project comes hot on the heels of a similar schem in Long Eaton where vacant shops have already been filled with creative hives of activity.
Some of the artists lined up to be involved at the former Burton store are from the area, including ex-Ilkeston School pupil Georgie Park, writer Chrissie Hall from West Hallam, Smalley-based fine artist Stephanie Richards and Bath Street’s own Wash Arts collective of artists.
