RUMOURS that Asda was planning to buy the Ilkeston campus of Derby College were denied this week by both the supermarket giant and the college.

Concerned staff at the Field Road campus – formerly South East Derbyshire College – contacted the Advertiser this week desperate for answers and fearing for their jobs.

One said: “Very strong, de-motivating rumours are circulating staff to the effect that Derby College are to sell or have sold the Ilkeston site.”

The source said that an unnamed councillor had apparently confirmed the rumour to be true to staff.

An Asda spokesman said it had no plans to buy the site nor any other site in Ilkeston at this stage.

A spokesman from the college said: “There are certainly no plans to sell the Field Road campus.

“Staff will of course be kept fully informed of plans in the future.”
