Biker scheme launched

AN operation to reduce the number of deaths and injuries involving motorcyclists on county roads was launched on Good Friday.

Operation Focus, funded by the Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership, will run until September.

There were 136 motorcyclists killed or seriously injured on the county’s roads last year compared to 94 the previous year.

Officers hope to reduce the figure by encouraging riders to ride more safely. Police will patrol roads where collisions are most common.

Head of roads policing, Chief Insp Steve Wilson, said: “We are absolutely committed to keeping people safe on the roads of Derbyshire.

“We’re not trying to catch bikers out, we want them to come to our county and enjoy our roads but most of all, we want them to ride sensibly and safely.”
