Ilkeston and Long Eaton have struck gold in the prestigious East Midlands in Bloom competition.
Both towns scooped the gold status in the large town category – a first for the borough.
Judges were bowled over by Erewash Borough Council’s colourful town centre floral displays, describing the colour scheme and quality of plants as ‘excellent’.
The Bloom judges inspected the appearance and facilities during tours of both towns in the summer, including visits to Victoria Park, Straw’s Bridge and Rutland Sports Park in Ilkeston.
Councillor Mike Wallis said: “We are absolutely thrilled with this double gold. It is a fantastic achievement in what has become a memorable and good news year for Erewash. The golden performance follows this summer’s news that we have scooped £1.2m of Heritage Lottery funding for two major projects at Erewash Museum and Victoria Park – while we also retained the Green Flag for Victoria Park.
“This is another good news milestone and will add to the feel-good factor in our borough. Thanks go to all those involved, both the council teams and the many volunteers, residents and schoolchildren.”
