A body found in the River Ouse in York has been officially confirmed as that of a young soldier, who is understood to have strong ties to Kimberley.

Eighteen-year-old Signaller Tyler Pearson, of York-based 2nd Signal Regiment, went missing after he entered the River Ouse near The Lowther pub in the early hours of 3 April.

Signaller Pearson is understood to have been a former pupil of Kimberley Comprehensive School.

North Yorkshire Police searching for the teenager were called at around 11.05am on Thursday April 17 after a man’s body was found in the river at Skeldergate Bridge.

Signaller Pearson’s family were notified and they travelled to York from their home in Nottingham.

North Yorkshire Police have now confirmed the identity.

Officers believe that Signaller Pearson, who was who was based at Imphal Barracks, was trying to swim to the far bank at Queen’s Staith during a night out with friends.

North Yorkshire’s police and crime commissioner Julia Mulligan said: “My heart goes out to Tyler’s family.”
