A would-be distraction burglar posed as a handyman to try and steal a safe from an elderly woman in Long Eaton.

The man called at a bungalow in Wyvern Avenue and told the homeowner that he was clearing out guttering in the area.

He talked his way inside the property after asking to fill his bucket up with warm water. He took some water and left the bungalow a short time later.

The 81-year-old woman later realised that a safe had been moved but not stolen by the offender.

Police want to hear from anyone who may have information on the attempted distraction burglary, which happened at about 7.25pm on July 21.

The man was white, in his mid-40s, had brown hair and spoke with a local accent.

Anyone who recognises the description of the man, may have seen him in the area, or who might have private CCTV, should call DS Dan Phillips on 101, quoting crime reference 16000203896.
