THE WIDOW of a pilot killed in the Wellington Bomber crash in Stanley Village has died.

Freda Burton’s husband Ken was killed when Wellington Bomber W5795 crashed in Stanley Village on 12 July 1942.

Mrs Burton, who was 97 when she died at her home in Cumbria, had visited the village every year since a memorial was dedicated in 2004.

Her daughter Hilary, who was not born when her father was killed in the tragedy, said: “Stanley Village has played such an enormous part in mum’s life these past few years and has given her such peace, reuniting her with memories of her beloved Ken, and seeing the respect afforded by all the villagers to the crew of W5795.

“The last Memorial Service was so wonderful for her, especially the Battle of Britain Hurricane flypast and the amazing turnout.”
