More people die from asbestos-related cancer in Erewash than most other parts of the UK, according to new statistics.
Figures from not-for-profit Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) reveal that from 2006 to 2010 mesothelioma – a terminal cancer of the lung wall – killed 21 people in the borough.
It is the equivalent to 2.9 deaths in 100,000 people compared to the England and Wales average of 2.5.
APIL president David Bott said: “This is bad enough, but the number of men dying from this disease is expected to peak during the next five years.”
He called on the Government to create a fund to act as a safety net for injured workers to help them pursue justice.
