As tempers flared during the debate over the plan to build 450 homes on Field Farm, the leader of the council blasted campaigners who packed out the council chamber.
Defending the plan, which was approved on greenbelt land off Ilkeston Road, Cllr Milan Radulovic said: “This meets the aspirations of local people.”
Addressing the public gallery he said: “What you mean is ‘not in my backyard’.”
The Labour councillor continued: “Everywhere, everybody in this council chamber knows of green fields that have been built on.
“But no one wants it built next to them – it isn’t just you.”
Liberal Democrat deputy leader Cllr David Watts said he was ‘very disappointed’ with the behaviour of the audience after there were calls of ‘liar’ from during the debate.
STRAG member Zoe Cockcroft said after the meeting: “I’m incredibly angry and this isn’t the end, we will fight it every way and will campaign for it to be discussed at a public inquiry.”
