AN INQUEST into the death of a dog-walker who was found in the frozen Erewash Canal on New Years Eve heard that he had been drinking ‘quite a lot’ during the night.
Pc Andrew Porton told Derby Coroners Court that Sam McKane, 42, of Thorpe Leys, had gone out for drinks on Thursday December 30 and returned home with friend Alan Faulkner.
The pair took Sam’s dog out for a walk at about 1am on New Years Eve and parted company in Fields Farm Road shortly after. Wife Tracey called the police at about 7am when he did not return home.
His body was found beneath the ice about 150 yards from the bank off Fields Farm Road at about 7.30am, the dog waiting by the waterside.
The inquest was adjourned.
