MONEY donated to an Ilkeston school will help pay for a bike rack so children can ride to school. County councillor Glennice Birkin handed pupils at Chaucer Junior School on Cranmer Street a cheque for £500 towards the pod from her community fund.
School bursar Joanne Wheeldon said: “The children were asked to come up with some ideas on things that we could ask the council for and one of the suggestions was somewhere to lock up their bikes so they could ride to school.
“They were really pleased to get the money and we’ll be carrying on raising funds to be able to get a rack installed as soon as possible.”
Cllr Birkin added: “When Mrs Upton, the headteacher at Chaucer told me about the number of children using their bikes to get to school and the lack of safe storage I was happy to make the donation.
“The money will go towards paying for somewhere safe for the children to put their bikes meaning they can cycle to school without worrying about where their bikes will be kept.”
