COLUMN: Are you man enough to stop the abuse?

Derbyshire Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse Service has launched a voluntary perpetrator programme to help stop male abusive behaviour towards female partners.

The programme requires men to attend a group session of two hours, once a week for approximately six months, with a further four maintenance sessions over a six-month period.

The group is facilitated by professionals and delivers a structured programme which addresses different forms of abusive behaviour. Groups are delivered 6.30pm to 8.30pm, weekly, at four locations across the county: Chesterfield – Monday, Ilkeston – Tuesday, Buxton – Wednesday and Swadlincote – Thursday.

We accept referrals from a variety of sources. Including self-referrals. Our referring criteria is as follows: Males aged over 16 where either he or his female partner live in Derbyshire, males who are using violent and abusive behaviour to their female partners, Males who have some recognition of their abusive behaviour and show some willingness to change it.

Sessions include covering topics such as power and control, emotional abuse, sexual abuse and violence and much more. We also encourage men to be proactive within group and take part in role plays and complete control logs to be discussed in group the following week.
