Comic opera bound to be a hit

Members of the Heanor and Ilkeston Operatic Society are seen here in mid-song during their production of Patience, by Gilbert and Sullivan.

But we have no idea when the picture was taken, nor any notes about the cast, who look resplendent in their costumes.

The comic opera was first performed in 1881, and was the first theatrical production in the world to be lit entirely by electric light.

The popular opera is a satire on literary fashions, fads and hero worship, and the production was bound to be be a hit.
