The Rt Revd Tony Porter, Bishop of Sherwood, is pictured here declaring the Cossall Community Hall officially open.
He joined in the celebrations with residents of Cossall and invited guests including Lord Middleton, whose grandfather had given the building to St Catherine’s Church in 1927.
Thanks to a £50,000 grant from Biffa Award and £30,000 raised through fundraising events by the residents it now enjoys a modern fully equipped kitchen, and disabled toilet in a new extension, giving the original room more space.
Starting its life as a single room school for the children of Cossall in 1816, the building has been used for community events since its closure as a school, but was greatly in need of updating.
A spokesman said: “A new wooden floor and mood lighting will ensure the building can now be used for a whole range of activities and events which will appeal to all ages.
“Residents are now looking forward to using the facilities.”
