Two Ilkeston women whose mums both survived cancer have decided to host a fundraising concert for Jamie Cragg after reading about him in the Advertiser.
Lily Taylor-Ward, 18, and Julie Keightley, 57, are both keen singers and wanted to help Jamie, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer earlier this summer.
Julie’s mum, Jean, has previously suffered leukaemia and breast cancer, and Lily’s mum Lisa, 46, was discovered to have ovarian cancer when she had a hysterectomy 12 years ago.
Lisa, who is organising the concert, said they all want to raise money for Jamie so that he can have specialised chemotherapy treatment in America - HIPEC - or if he is not eligible for the treatment, so that his family can create some lasting memories during a trip to Florida.
She added: “When I read about Jamie I just thought ‘I have to do something to help’.
“We both know about the effect cancer can have on you and your family and we’d really like to try and raise some funds for this lovely young guy, who deserves a chance at life.”
The concert will be a night of music from the movies and shows, as well as much-loved Christmas numbers all sung by Lily and Julie. Lily is currently studying Musical Theatre in London and Julie has been singing for 30 years alongside stars such as French and Saunders, Tony Christie and Ruby Wax.
The evening will also include a raffle, an auction and there will be food available.
More than 100 tickets have already been sold and Lisa hopes that they will raise £1,000 for Jamie.
The concert is on Saturday December 6 from 7.30pm until 11pm at the Kirk Hallam Social Club, on Dallimore Road. Tickets cost £7.50 or £5 for under-11s.
