COUNCIL investigators prosecuted 21 people and issued 57 cautions to benefit fraudsters from April last year to February 2011, according to figures just released.

Erewash Borough Council’s Benefit Fraud Team also identified more than £208,000 of overpaid housing and council tax benefit due to fraud or claimant error in the same period.

A spokesman said that much of the success was due to information provided by the public. The authority is now urging people to come forward.

Cllr David Stephenson said: “It is vital that we stamp out benefit fraud and with your help our investigation team can bring all proven benefit offences to a successful conclusion.”
