Councillor’s employment vision for ironworks site

A LABOUR councillor has suggested that the former Stanton Ironworks site should be used to house a national training college and a marina in a bid to boost employment in the borough.

Cllr Louis Booth is set to propose a motion at a full Erewash Borough Council meeting tonight (Thursday) to ask the leading Tory group to encourage Erewash MP Jessica Lee and Government ministers to meet a delegation of borough businesses and teaching providers to discuss the plan.

He said: “Youth unemployment is running at record levels. I would like some commitment from this council and this Government to investment in training centres and further education opportunities in Erewash so that we can up-skill the next generation.

“The Stanton site in Ilkeston is possibly the largest brownfield site in Derbyshire and we are suggesting that the Government seek funding to help establish a larger canal network, a marina and a large training college to deal with renewable technologies and the sciences.”

He added: “We need to demonstrate our commitment to address this problem before it gets any worse.”
