Councillors to be grilled over parishes

OPPOSITION councillors are due to ask the council to investigate alleged overspending on the borough’s parish councils.

A motion proposed by the Erewash Labour group at an Extraordinary Council meeting due to be held before the full council meeting tonight will ask councillors to vote to undertake a review of spending on concurrent functions over the last eight years.

Last year the group produced figures from a Freedom of Information request which they believe showed that the Tories were ‘wasting’ money by giving parish councils funding for functions, which they could carry out with their own cash.

The Conservative group has defended the payments.

But now the Labour group wants them to be reviewed and has called for auditors to be informed if it proves necessary.
