A man who attacked an elderly relative and was seen brandishing knives in the street has been jailed for ten years.

Damian Niedzwiecki of Breedon Street, Long Eaton, pleaded guilty to wounding the woman at a house in Howard Street on Friday July 13.

At Derby Crown Court on Monday November 12, Judge Andrew Hamilton praised three men who alerted police when they saw the 25-year-old enter the house with the weapons.

They were each rewarded with £250 after they forced their way into the house behind Niedzwiecki and found the victim lying on the floor.

Det Const Ian Blakeley said: “The attack left the elderly victim very shaken and upset.

“She suffered a cut to her cheek that needed stitches and was covered in bruises.

“The men who tried valiantly to intervened should be commended for their efforts.

“They saw her lying in the living room and tried to get into the house but they were confronted by Niedzwiecki.”

Judge Hamilton also gave the 25-year-old a restraining order to protect the victim.
