Armed police were called out to Stanley village last night (Tuesday) after a man was threatened with a machete in a sheath.

The victim called police after he saw his bike being stolen from his garage in Cat and Fiddle Lane, West Hallam.

He followed the thief to Park Avenue in Stanley where the offender pulled out what he believed to be a large knife in a cover.

When armed police arrived the victim told them that the thief had entered a nearby house in Coronation Road, leaving the van he had been driving and the victim’s pushbike.

Police entered the house only to discover the 67-year-old occupant was growing what they believed to be cannabis.

He was arrested on suspicion of cultivating cannabis, questioned and has been bailed pending further tests on the suspected plants.

But police are still hunting for the bike thief with the machete, who was not inside.

Anyone with information should call police on 101.
