Bridge drama on bypass

CHALONS Way was closed on Sunday when a man was spotted hanging from a footbridge.

Police cordoned off the bypass at the junction with Station Road at around 4.20pm.

The road remained closed while they spoke to the 29-year-old on the footbridge nearest to White Lion Square.

An officer spoke to the man and pulled him back over the railings on to the bridge.

He was taken to hospital for a check up and detained under the Mental Health Act.

A police spokesman said: “We received a call from someone saying there was a man standing on the wrong side of the bridge’s railings. On arrival at the scene an officer approached and spoke to the man and managed to get him back over to the right side of the railings safely.”

The road reopened after ten minutes.
