A 34-year-old man has been ordered to pay compensation after driving off without paying for fuel at a petrol station in Ilkeston.
Darren Maguire filled up at Bellini’s on Heanor Road and was caught on CCTV camera driving off without paying.
Mr Maguire was traced to an address in Nottingham where he was handed an £80 fine for the non-payment of fuel.
After refusing to pay he appeared at South Derbyshire Magistrates Court and was fined £37 plus court costs of £85.
He was also made to pay a victim surcharge of £15 and compensation of £40.08.
Pc Andy Kendal-Edwards, from the Cotmanhay Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “This type of forecourt crime has prompted the owner of Bellini’s to put a number of deterrents in place. Included in those deterrents is the installation of some excellent CCTV kit which enabled a successful outcome on this occasion.”
James Bellini, the owner of the garage, said: “We are really pleased with this latest result and the effort of the police. The chances of people getting away without paying for fuel now have been greatly reduced. We hope this serves as a warning to anyone considering such an action.”
