POLICE are hailing a three-week operation into tackling fuel thefts in the south of the county a success after several arrests were made this month.
Operation Inman was started in response to a rise from 348 fuel thefts – including from vehicles and from petrol stations – from April to September last year to 435 in the same period this year in Erewash, South Derbyshire and Derby.
In Ilkeston, police are trying to track the driver of a grey Audi who filled up his car at the Total garage in Nottingham Road at 4.30am on Monday October 10.
And at 5.15pm on September 20, the driver of a silver VW Bora filled up at Bellini’s, in Heanor Road, and drove off without paying.
Chf Insp Sunita Gamblin said: “The rising price of fuel has resulted in an increase in thefts but we are working hard to tackle the problem.”
