Two suspected shoplifters have been charged just days after police launched a campaign to tackle thefts from Ilkeston shops this Christmas.
Amy Terry received a community order and a rehabilitation requirement for being caught stealing from Boots in Bath Street on Tuesday.
The 20-year-old, of Malthouse Road, appeared at Derby Magistrates Court yesterday where she was also sentenced for possession of 0.1 grammes of heroin.
A £50 fine was written off after she had spent a day in the cells at the courthouse.
Another suspected shoplifter Luke Meads, 31, has been remanded in custody after he was arrested on Wednesday.
Meads, of Stamford Street, is accused of stealing nearly £200 of goods from Boots.
He is due to appear by video link at the same court on Thursday.
Insp Nick Daines at Ilkeston station called Terry a ‘prolific shoplifter’.
“In the run-up to Christmas, shoplifters go out to gain further money to support a drug habit or alternatively to steal gifts to give out themselves,” he said.
“We are determined to support local retailers, especially at a time when they are feeling the pinch.”
