A dad cycled to London this weekend to raise cash and awareness for a Cotmanhay nursery earmarked for closure.
Dave Fairclough, 30, works at the Pre School Learning Alliance nursery where his two-year-old son Declan attends.
On Saturday he set off on the 150 mile ride from the nursery, based at the Cotmanhay Children’s Centre on Beauvale Drive.
He said: “It was really, really hard work but well worth it.
“I had a puncture within half an hour so that set me back but I managed to make up time.
“The first day was the hardest, I covered 90 miles.
“On the second day I was buzzing and so glad that I’d done it.”
Dave is yet to collect all of the sponsorship money but knows he has raised more than £100 to pay for activities for children at the nursery.
The dad-of-one, who lives near the Gallows Inn, shares concerns of other parents who use the charity run nursery which is closing at the end of the month due to sustainability.
He said: “Where will all the children go? No end of parents are saying they will have to give up work because of the closure.
“I know my bike ride won’t raise anywhere near the amount of money needed to keep the nursery open but I hoppe it will prove to the powers-that-be that we do need affordable childcare in Cotmanhay.”
