Erewash MP Jessica Lee has said she is disappointed at plans to merge two of the area’s biggest secondary schools.

Speaking shortly after hearing the news that Ormiston plan to close the Bennerley site and move pupils over to Ilkeston by 2014 Ms Lee said she wants to hear from anyone with concerns over the announcement and will work with both schools and everyone involved to reach a satisfactory outcome for Erewash.

She said: “I’m obviously disappointed that the Ormiston Trust seem to have come to a decision to close one of the school’s so early after taking over.

“The only thing that matters at the moment is the pupils, their education and their future.

“I’m currently in touch with both schools and any constituents who want to contact me can do so and I will be happy to discuss any concerns they have with them.

“I’m requesting a meeting with the Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove, so I can update him on the situation and ask him if there is any guidance and advice he can offer at this stage.”
