A couple with 70 years of teaching experience between them have taught their final lessons in Ilkeston and Long Eaton.

Val and Colin Tucker retired this summer after spending 63 of those years at Field House Infants School and Wilsthorpe Community School respectively.

Val, who has spent 30 years at the Lower Whitworth Road school, said: “In the classroom it’s always a stimulating environment and the children never fail to surprise and delight me.

“Carrying bags full of paper in and out of the house on a daily basis, on the other hand, is something I will gladly be rid of.”

Colin, who has taught English, drama and media at the Long Eaton secondary school for 33 years, rose through the ranks to become assistant headteacher.

“It’s great to be part of something where everyone is focused on doing even better,” he said.

The couple live in Beeston.
