An Ilkeston business that is a cafe by day and Thai restaurant by night has been rated as ‘excellent’ by customers.

Emma’s, on Pelham Street, has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence from Trip Advisor following rave review on the website.

Run by Emma Wilson and David Kettle, the couple, opened the business as a cafe in 2010. They had previously run The Poplar pub but the recession left them with no choice but to close it.

Emma said: “When we moved to the cafe we only had a few pounds left. Luckily we owned all the cookers , tables, chairs and David decorated best he could. We worked endlessly making it look better.”

Two years ago they decided to start doing Thai nights after noticing a gap in the market in Ilkeston.

Emma said: “We lost everything in the pub. We had hardly got on our feet when the restaurant started, it was very difficult. I looked around Ilkeston and there were loads of Chinese restaurants but no Thai ones, so we thought there was a market for it and started formulating a menu.

“We started with booking only banquets, then people started saying why don’t you open as a restaurant, so we opened three nights a week.

“Customers then started to make comments on Trip Advisor. All of a sudden we got an award . We were in shock because we weren’t aiming for anything like that.”
