Trees ‘hacked’ as fruit ready to pick

FRUIT trees have been pruned by the council after they were damaged during grass cutting.

A forager contacted the Advertiser to say that trees had been destroyed just as the fruits were coming into season.

Phil Wright, director for operational services at Erewash Borough Council, said: “The council is currently tidying the whole of the former BMX site on Beauvale Drive, near Cotmanhay Junior School, to improve the area.

“Unfortunately during recent grass cutting some of the fruit trees were damaged by a rough grass cutter, a large piece of equipment that has to be attached to a tractor.

“No lasting damage has been caused to the trees and the council is pruning back the damaged branches.”

The forager added: “They’ve not pruned the trees they’ve been hacked and now they won’t grow back properly.

“It’s ridiculous.”
