It was celebration time when former Ilkeston mayoress Gwen Cope turned 90 — and helped raise £911 for charity into the bargain.
Gwen (pictured delivering a birthday speech) marked the special occasion with a party on Friday August 29 for 150 family and friends at the Smalley Common Working Mens’ Club, Stanley Common.
She requested no presents but instead invited donations for the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance.
Gwen has five daughters, Peggy, Kathleen, Barbara, Gwenda and Tina, eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, most of whom were at the party.
As part of her celebrations, Gwen also enjoyed a ride in a Bentley limousine and a meal at the Newdigate Inn at West Hallam on Saturday (August 30).
Gwen is well-known locally for her charity work, including with the local branch of the Guide Dogs for the Blind.
