A family-run business has marked the completiton of an ambitious £2 million expansion.
Roberts Bakery has installed a state-of-the-art new sandwich thins line at its site on Manners Industrial Estate, in Ilkeston.
The new line will run alongside the company’s existing daily fresh bread line.
Roberts Bakery purchased Ilkeston-based Aldreds the Bakers Ltd in 2010. The investment has led to the creation of 30 new jobs at Ilkeston.
Fourth generation members of the Roberts family - Mike Roberts and Lindsay Occleston - unveiled the new plant alongside Val Custance, Mayor of Erewash.
Mike Roberts said: “As a family business with a long heritage spanning 128 years, we have a real passion for baking quality bread and bakery goods. Investment is important for the long term future of our business and we’re proud to launch this new line, which has increased our capacity and created additional jobs for local people. We will continue to invest in the future capability of Ilkeston to strengthen the position of the business within the market and help it achieve its growth aspirations.”
The company also owns Aldreds bakery in Ilkeston.
Rob Newton, facilities manager said: “The move came about after we outgrew our premises on Manners Avenue, and it will mean we can meet the demands of our customers.”
Val Custance, Mayor of Erewash, added: “This bakery has been a constant presence in Ilkeston for nearly 120 years and it is a key employer in the region. I was absolutely delighted to visit the site and see this impressive piece of equipment. Clearly, it has helped the business to increase production and achieve growth. It’s encouraging to see a local company investing and working hard to secure a strong future for staff and I was very pleased to toast its success.”
