A pub in Kirk Hallam which was a target for vandals has been taken over by a family in a bid to boost community spirit.

Kuldip Sandhu is the new landlord of The Castle (formerly the Nottingham Castle) pub, on Queen Elizabeth Way.

He took over after the former owners moved on as a result of several vandalism attacks.

Kuldip, who also owns Nisa Today on the precinct opposite the pub, said: “The pub standing empty would have been even more of a magnet for vandals and anti-social beahviour.

“As well as that an empty business does no favours to others in the area.

“We wanted to take over and give the pub a new lease of life as a community venue and somewhere local people can go.

“We know that pubs aren’t doing particularly well at the moment but it was really promising to see so many people here when we reopened on Friday night.

“Everyone was really keen to give us their support which looks good for the future.”

At present the pub will just be serving drinks and hiring out the function room for local celebrations and events.

The kitchen is currently under renovation but as soon as it’s ready they will be serving up traditional pub food.

Plans are also in the pipeline for theme nights, including Indian, Chinese and Italian.

Kuldip added: “We’ve already created eight jobs and there’ll be more when we get the kitchen ready.

“We’ve done this for the community so really hope that their support continues.”
