Football pitch gets go-ahead

A £45,000 all-weather football pitch is set to be installed at a Sandiacre leisure centre, thanks to Olympic Legacy funding.

Sport England released £20,000 of funding to upgrade Friesland Leisure Centre’s astroturf pitch to the latest ‘3G’ surface.

The realistic artificial grass is the same used by the Russian national football team in extreme weather.

Cllr Mike Wallis said: “We are very proud that our project has been selected by Sport England as one that rightly symbolises the spirit of the 2012 Olympics.”

The pitch will display the London 2012 Inspire mark, celebrating its link to the legacy of Olympic Games.

“It will provide a state-of-the art football pitch for footballers of all ages that can be used all year round,” added Cllr Wallis.

“A quality Olympic legacy that will forever link Erewash to the success of the London Games and provide a sporting facility to encourage future stars.”

Erewash Borough Council put £25,000 towards the project

Sport England announced the first wave of successful projects last week. Up to 1,000 projects are to receive funding.
