Vandals who drove over football pitches in Ilkeston caused so much damage that teams will have to find alternative grounds to play on.

Erewash Borough Council has appealed for help in tracking down vandals who have ploughed up the football pitches in Cotmanhay by driving cars onto the site and skidding across the turf.

The mindless vandalism has caused major damage to the two pitches at Cotmanhay Playing Fields, with the ruts in one of the pitches so deep that it is now likely to be unavailable for teams to play on for the rest of the season.

The playing fields, which are just off Beauvale Drive, are owned by the borough council and well used by local football clubs, which now face having to find alternative pitches while major repairs are carried out.

A spokesman said: “The vandal attack happened is thought to have taken place during the evening on Friday 6 March, and the council is urging anyone with information to get in touch.”

Anyone with information can contact the council on 0115 907 2244 or ring the confidential PRIDE-line number on 0115 850 8383.

Alternatively, information can be given to the police on the non-emergency number 101.
