Free art classes for older people in Kirk Hallam

A programme of free arts and crafts sessions for older people living in Kirk Hallam got underway last week thanks to a joint project by Erewash Borough Council and the Lottery-funded Big Kirk Hallam group.

Eight drop-in art sessions will be held fortnightly on Thursdays at Kirk Hallam Community Hall on Kenilworth Drive between 1.30pm and 2.30pm, all the way through until April 28.

The hour-long get-togethers are part of the Arts at the HeART project that uses art to help improve the wellbeing of older people by bringing them together and helping create objects, pictures and more.

Borough councillor Mike Wallis said: “This is a great opportunity for older people in Kirk Hallam.

“Creating art in community sessions like this is a wonderful way to meet others and is known to bring health benefits too - residents find new interests and gain a sense of achievement and well-being.”

An artist will provide all the materials and resources at the sessions and help residents to enjoy being creative.

Anyone interested in taking part can contact council officers Laura Guthrie or Frances Watt on 0115 907 2244 (ext 4604) or drop into a session to find out more.
