Further glory for award winning park

Ilkeston’s Victoria Park has won the prestigious Green Flag award for the fourth year running – sparking a second celebration for the historic park inside a month.

The national award, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country.
A green flag flying overhead is a sign to visitors that the area boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

It comes just three weeks after the council won a Heritage Lottery Fund award of £740,800 for its ambitious project that will see the complete restoration and secure the long-term future of three key features within the park – the bandstand, the pavilion and the pergola arch.

Councillor Mike Wallis said: “What a month for good news it has been. The announcement that our bid for Lottery funding had been successful was a fantastic day and now we have ensured that we can fly the Green Flag with pride above this historic and much loved park.”
