AN ILKESTON charity shop has been ranked the second best in the country for receiving gift aided donations.

Debra, on Bath Street, is one of 120 shops across the UK supporting people with Epidermolysis Bullosa – a genetic condition that causes skin to blister and shed.

The Gift Aid scheme works by registering people who donate goods as UK taxpayers meaning that when the goods are sold on by the shop, the charity can claim back extra money from the government.

Last year Debra raised more than £500,000 through the Gift Aid scheme.

Manager of the Bath Street shop, Sandra Terry, said: “It is all due to the generosity of local people who continuously donate unwanted goods, not to mention the fantastic efforts of our team of volunteers who do such good work.”
