Rumours that a popular Ilkeston golf club was closing for good have been quashed by new committee members.
A message claiming Ilkeston Borough Golf Club was shutting ‘because of a lack of members’ appeared on its Facebook page two weeks ago.
This came just days after four leading committee members at the West End Drive club were kicked off by fellow members, who gave a vote of no confidence.
New secretary Barry Brentnall, 75, set the record straight this week and made an appeal for cash. He said that the decision over committee changes were taken amid fears about the financial management of the club and budgeting.
He said there were concerns that it could have gone bust.
The closure rumours may have been ‘a bit of sour grapes’, he said.
But Brian Smith, who had been secretary for seven years until he was ousted, denied he had been mismanaging the club’s finances.
“I was the second longest serving secretary at the club, so if I had been mismanaging it, I would have been doing so for a long time,” he said.
Denying having anything to do with the closure comments, he said ‘he wouldn’t know where to start’ with Facebook and did not know who was in charge of the site.
Mr Brentnall added: “If there are any sponsors out there, it would be nice to have a little more funding to help us out.”
Erewash Borough Council owns and maintains the course with the club running its affairs independently.
