NOTTINGHAMSHIRE County Council has ‘mapped out’ Awsworth cemetery to record the graveyard as it is today.
The council’s archaeology department has recorded where each grave is located with details about each one so the record can be used for years to come. The group looked for old missing grave stones, which often sunk into the ground and got covered over by grass.
The record will be used by people studying genealogy and people researching their family tree.
The project was instigated by Awsworth History Society, who applied to the county council for a grant because all old records about St Peter’s churchyard were destroyed.
Similar projects are taking place elsewhere across the UK.
