A teenager from West Hallam is preparing to do battle for the prestigious Miss England title — after being crowned Miss Derby.

Hannah-Jayne Talbot, 19, who is a part-time sales assistant, decided to enter the competition in the city after being scouted at the Clothes Show in Birmingham in December.

“Entering the competition was something I’d never really considered as it’s not really me, but I just thought, why not?” she explained.

After securing sponsorship from Ilkeston hairdresser’s Peter James & Co, Hannah began preparing for the three round competition, which saw her cheerlead, wear a recycled dress and an evening gown.

“When I won I was so shocked but so happy,” she said.

“The hard work starts now for June’s competition, which I’m really hoping to win. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the support from my family or Peter James’ hair salon.”

Inspired by a family member, Hannah-Jayne is now preparing by supporting the Alzheimer’s society.

Her mum, Amanda Talbot, said Hannah-Jayne was proof of ‘nothing ventured, nothing gained’.

The Miss Derby winner now hopes to pursue modelling but still has hopes of joining the police force one day.
