Honouring Victoria Cross hero

Hundreds of pounds is needed to help fund a memorial bench in Stapleford.

Community groups in the town want residents to help them to raise £756 so they can purchase the World War One Memorial Bench which would be dedicated to Walter Parker VC.

Next year will mark 100 years since Walter Parker was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery during the conflict. He died, aged 55, at Stapleford in 1936 and is buried in the town’s cemetery.

A memorial service to him is held annually at Stapleford by the local Royal Marines Association on the Sunday April 30, the date in 1915 in which he saved the lives of wounded men.

The idea is to present the bench to the people of Stapleford on April 26, 2015.
