A group of 13 friends have committed to growing their hair or beard for a year to raise money for a cancer charity.
The pals, all regulars at The Three Horse Shoes pub in Derby Road, Ilkeston, began the challenge on June 1 to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
The pub’s landlord, Scott Ryder, came up with the idea after a close friend who had cancer was helped by Macmillan nurses.
Joining him will be Jake Frobisher, Craig Hutchinson, Tom Lacey, Jack Ryder, Alex Forrest, Adam Henshaw, Richard Dawson, John Gorman, John Hayes, Steve Dickens, Darren Gilbert and Mark Bird.
Alex Forrest, who is one of then taking on the hairy challenge, said: “We have chosen to grow our hair or beard for one whole year .
“This started when Scott asked us locals to compete in the challenge for such a great cause.
“We will be having monthly updates, with photos taken at the pub to show our progress.”
Each of the men will grow either their hair or beard, with a couple of them being brave enough to do both.
Alex said: “We will all have to follow certain rules, including no trimming or cutting, unless you are growing a beard, in which case it has been agreed that you can lightly trim around the mouth only.
“Other than that, the forfeit is to pay £250 to Macmillan.
“This is a great charity and is close to home for a lot of people. Our aim is to raise as much money as possible for this fantastic cause.”
The team have a target of £2,500.
